1984 Pastel White Get-a-Way Hightop Rust Repair

There are a lot of good Vanagons out there that have fallen victim to poorly done body work, often resulting in more damage than good over the long term. It was clear that this van was one of them when it rolled into the shop. Beneath the generous amounts of body filler, faded white house-paint, and the tan stucco bedliner, this Get-a-Way Hightop camper was in great shape; little rust, clean untouched interior, and mechanically dialed. Certainly it was a van worthy of having the body repaired - the right way.

The main focus of the job was the rusted outer trailing arm mount. The rusted out rear window frame was allowing water to get inside the body of the van, eventually making its way down and pooling on the outer trailing arm mount. It was dangerously close to being completely rusted off of the frame, possibly resulting in the trailing arm seperating from the body. To properly execute such an invasive repair we knew we would have to cut through several layers of body metal. Not wanting to make any compromises, we opted to replace every panel in the way, using only the highest quality genuine Volkswagen new-old-stock panels available. With the newly repaired section looking as good as it did from the factory, we decided to address all the rust on the drivers side.
